Although I’ve had a negative opinion of VMI for many years, after reading this book I had a greater understanding and respect for their traditions and goals. I also had a greater appreciation for all the work that had to be done to prepare for the women’s arrival.
Every detail was endlessly debated and worked out in advance. The entire student body had to attend several classes and take tests on the proper conduct towards the female cadets prior to their arrival. Each freshman at VMI has a senior class mentor assigned to them who works with them one on one on a daily basis.
