May 27, Summary: If you’re still playing Destiny on a regular basis, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you pick up House of Wolves. Between the new arena mode and the additional competitive multiplayer content there’s a lot to do here and it should keep you busy for some time. Why do I enjoy the game for what it is? Taking new weapons and gear into the crucible can be an addictive past time, and a nearly endless cycle of effort and reward. The new mode is called The Trials of Osiris and it plays a little like a mixture of the existing game mode Skirmish and a one-life-only type game mode, such as Search and Destroy from the Call of Duty series. The first team to eliminate all three players on the opposing team wins.

They released a very playable, highly compelling and gorgeous game on 4 platforms, but failed to deliver on a number of fronts. Dec 9, Destiny — Matchmaking updates address connection complaints Bungie further tweaked the Crucible matchmaking settings yesterday, no doubt in response to months of complaints on their own forums and the DestinyTheGame subreddit, in an attempt to create lobbies with better connections. In simplistic terms, it attempts to match you with players at a similar skill level to you, ensuring games are close, and everyone is competitive.
Bungie feel this is important for the health of Crucible. Bungie were at pains to stress, in a news post from November , that they will always prioritise connection quality when finding these lobbies — or rather, that connection quality is the last thing they will sacrifice. At a very high level, they describe the matchmaking process as follows: They either struggle to find matches as the pool of similarly skilled players inevitably decreases the higher you go , or eventually get put into lobbies where connection quality has been sacrificed.
On those occasions where a good match is found, the competition is so fierce highly skilled players inevitably using best-in-slot perks on their best-in-slot weapons that it ceases to be fun and instead becomes hard work. These two approaches are at odds with each-other. The middle-ground is not to scrap SBMM entirely — but rather, to try to widen the skill brackets, increasing the pool of players available when creating a lobby, which in turn should naturally ensure better connection quality.
Bungie came to the same conclusion, and this is the basis of this weeks update.
The player’s health bar is not visible, but players are instead equipped with a damage-absorbing shield that regenerates when not taking fire. For example, most Covenant weapons eschew disposable ammo clips for a contained battery, which cannot be replaced if depleted. However, these weapons can overheat if fired continuously for prolonged periods. The player can carry a total of eight grenades four human grenades, four Covenant to dislodge and disrupt enemies. New in Halo 2 is the ability to board enemy vehicles that are near the player and traveling at low speeds.

The story also introduces a new social area filled with new characters and multi-step quests, as well as a new open environment on Earth filled with mini-missions.
As with previous expansions, players who buy this expansion are provided a token that allows them to instantly level up a single character to level 40 to ensure they’re capable of beginning the new story missions right away. Beyond the campaign, gamers will find a new strike mission for groups of three players to tackle cooperatively and a new raid mission for groups of six players. The Crucible — Destiny’s competitive multiplayer arena — has also been given new maps, along with a new mode in which players earn points not for eliminating opponents but rather collecting the crests dropped by fallen foes.

Rise of Iron’s new story missions feel a bit more scripted, which could make them appeal to more fans of story-driven games, but there are only five of them and they’ll take most players less than three hours to play through the first time.

The presentation is top notch and the game transitions seamlessly from menu to menu and location to location. The game draws inspiration from Halo, Borderlands, Call of Duty, and Mass Effect and manages to harmoniously bring all the features together to make a very solid and balanced game.

Unfortunately, that good stuff comes all at the end game and you’ll have to dredge through the hour story to get there. Destiny 2 plays like a cross between Borderlands and Halo.
It’s a story driven shooter with repetitive level design, samey reskin enemies, and randomized loot. As you progress through the game, you’ll travel freely between different planets in the solar system. Each location has an open world area with public events and side quests. When you start a story mission in these areas, it’s instanced. When you reach level 20 max level , you’ll return to these same areas to complete daily and weekly activities and challenges for randomize loot rewards.
This can all be done cooperatively or solo and none of it presents any real challenge to a seasoned FPS player. Jumps are long and floaty as if there’s low gravity.

The Guardians are divided into three distinct races: Humans, Awoken, and the Exo. Each class has two sub-classes, each containing a skill tree upgrading system to unlock and customize grenades, powerful melees and other abilities. The most effective ability of a sub-class is called a ‘super’, which is a specialised skill move that a Guardian can use in battle.

It recently became a topic of conversation over on the Destiny Subreddit here. It’s good to know that there are a lot of other long time players in a similar situation, with 1. The thought is that with the April update Bungie, without informing us again, like in December, added in SBMM to Trials that grows in intensity as the card progresses. Personally I haven’t run, in around 8 cards since the patch, past 7 wins on a single card.
On that specific card, at both 6 wins and 7 wins the teams that beat us Won the Ultimate Victory went to the Lighthouse by filling in their 9th win. Something that with card based matchmaking should be impossible.

On one side is Valor, a ranking that only goes up and is designed to highlight time commitment that people make to the Crucible. On the other is Glory, a ranking that can go up or down based on wins, losses, and streaks, and will determine your skill level. Both rankings have six sub-levels Guardian, Brave, Heroic, Fabled, Mythic, and Legend with rewards granted as each level is reached. On the Valor side, points cap out at , but you can reset your rank once you reach that similar to Prestige in Call of Duty.
Certain rewards will require rank resets a certain number of times, but there is no cap to the number of times you can reset. If you go on a win streak, you will get a bonus that increases up to five wins. Glory is more difficult to increase and requires real skill with PVP. The points cap out at , going up with wins and win streaks, but down with losses and loss streaks.

I was looking forward to an enjoyable time shooting monsters, which seemed like a fair expectation from Bungie, the creators of Halo. After a month of endless repetition, an overcomplicated leveling system and practically non-existent storytelling, I called it quits and moved on to better things like Alien: Isolation and Call of Duty: However, Destiny has had a remarkable amount of staying power, building a community obsessed with what they promise is enthralling lore and the loot hunt at the heart of the game.
I decided to give Destiny another shot last month, with only a few weeks left to go until The Taken King, a hotly anticipated expansion pack that came out today. One of my goals was to finish leveling my main character from last year.

It offered enjoyable gunplay, lots of gear to grind and sift through, and some really stellar set piece moments. Now, Destiny 2 is here, and believe it or not, developer Bungie really did fix almost everything fans hated about the first game. Aside from a couple of cinematics sprinkled throughout the campaign and some often confusing tidbits tossed in by characters squawking in your ear during missions, the bulk of the backstory was literally not even in the game at all.
The campaign has a ton of cinematic sequences that make the world and its inhabitants feel much more present. Go somewhere, do what you have to do, go to orbit, pick a new place, go there, then go to orbit again.
Gameplay Bungie has described the game as a “shared-world shooter” for having combined elements from first-person shooters and massively multiplayer online games MMOs.
